2020 Projects

Here are a list of some projects we are either working or have completed
  • The month of May really starts up the season and have been lucky enough to help MB Fisheries stock Walleye fry around the region, the full list of lakes can be found under the stocking section.
  • At the end of May, a member of our club was called to assist MIT with fish recapture from Pelican Lake. These were fish that escaped through the control valves at the south end of Pelican Lake.  Hoop nets were placed to recapture and all sport fish were put back into Pelican lake.
  • July we had a member of our group take part in AIS information session in Killarney. This was a great session to learn about all the aquatic invasive species in Manitoba.

  • Assisted MB Fisheries with stocking of Trout fingerlings at Eternal Springs near Virden with stocking of 500 Rainbow and 500 Brown Trout fingerlings 12-15cm long. This is the first time in 5 years that these ponds had been stocked.
  • Members also met the Trout Hatchery truck at William Lake where we assisted in stocking 11,500 Brown Trout and 7,000 Rainbow Trout fingerlings which were 12-15cm. Proceeded to Bower Lake to stock 10,000 Rainbow and 5,000 Brown Trough fingerlings.
  • In October, members assisted with a net index of Killarney Lake. This hadn't been done since 1995, where 1 net was set. This time multiple nets were set in different locations in order to get the best results. Although results are not available yet, MB Fisheries was quite happy with the results.
  • In the fall our club just recently completed our first major project which was investigating lakes in Southern Manitoba for possible future development. This was a great project to learn more about different water bodies in our area. Stay tuned for the full report.
  • We continue to do dissolved oxygen testing to make sure lakes are getting the proper oxygen. Different fish need more or less oxygen, hence why a lot of small lakes or reservoirs have aeration systems in order to keep oxygen levels in the necessary range for fish populations.
  • Assisted Manitoba Fisheries with lake index & net assessments of the following lakes Rock Lake 2018, Goudney Reservoir 2018, Stephenfield Lake 2019
